Sports 8 - The Elk City News March 16, 2024 By Alex Alvarez Merritt’s Awesome Basketball Year. A Little For the first time in school history, both the boys’ and girls’ 2-A School With History Making Season teams qualified for the State Tournament in 2-A. It is the dream of any school that both the boys and girls qualify for a State Tour- nament in the same year. Of course, it gives them some sort of pride and satisfaction, but it is also a great goal to have the fol- lowing year. It will definitely be an incentive. STATE TOURNAMENT BOYS: ‘The boys fell to #4 in the state on the first playoff game. Hen- nesey Eagles turned to be a very tough opponent and defeated the Merritt Oilers 59-50. Nothing to be ashamed of. The Oilers finished with an 18-10 record and a good showing in the playoffs. In their final game, Joshua Ligon had 17 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Caden Smith had 13 points, and Cade Dunlap had 11, with three 3's in the second half. Luke Peffer had 9 points and 7 rebounds. Torres led Hennesey with 22 points. Caden Smith, Caden Dunlap, Joshua Ligon, Mos Flowers and Mason Mong were the seniors and did a great job leading the team this season. Coach Husband is very appreciative of the support received this year, and he is looking forward to a great season twelve months from now. STATE TOURNAMENT GIRLS: ‘The Merritt girls are the “Athletes of The Year” as far as a Mer- ritt School is concerned. They finished the season with a great week in the playoffs by taking the State Title for the third time in school history and first time since 1982. (1978 was the first time) ‘The girls had three perfect games where they never lost sight that the only score that counted was the final score. Never giving up even when they were trailing by as many as four points at one time during the game. Then, trailing by one point going to the last quarter, their tough opponents scored 23 points, but Merritt scored 25 to win by a single point in one of the most contested and close games ever in a final game. Addison Hartman scored 11 points in the final period (total of 17 points for the most for the team) to be the Oilers best scorer. The final score: 57-56. Previously they won on Wednesday 56 to 48, and 56 to 38. Congratulations to Coach Jeff Daugherty and all of the girls! Soccer ByAlex Alvarez ‘The soccer game on Friday, March 8th, was cancelled by the Paloduro team from Texas due to weather problems. On Tuesday, March 12, the boys and girls played Pathways in Elk City: ‘The Girls won their third game in a row, this time away at Pathways 4 - 1. Jordan Willeford scored 2 goals and Marcella Mendez and Rhiannon Halleen scored one a piece. The girls are now 3-0. ‘As well, the boys won their third in a row by a score of 3-0. Jo- sias Reyes scored first with a beautiful header; followed bya pen- alty kick by Braulio Luna that had nothing but the back of the net in its path and finished with a long strike by Kushtrin Maloku. Coach Zak Stamm for the girls and Jason Xenos for the boys are havinga great start with their teams. Next game will be March 26 vs Weatherford, following by a tournament at Weatherford on Photos by Jim L. Hodnett March 28-29.
