March 2, 2024 The Elk City News -9 Coach Andy Peffer talking to athletes in company of coach- es Thornton and Garmon. Photo by Alex Alvarez Restoring Sports Coverage By Alex Alvarez ‘The Elk City News will restore its commitment to cover local sports, especially high school, Varsity and Junior Varsity, in or- der not only to cover results, but also to promote our youth. We will cover all spring sports. Winter sports are almost over. The only team left in play is the Basketball Girls team coached by Sean Hamm. As this writing, they are playing in the Consolation Bracket of the State Champi- onship, and must win today to continue in the tournament. They play Wagoner who will be the home team. Coming up in the spring, you will have Track & Field (headed by Andy Peffer, with several assistants, among them: brothers Shylar and Shayne Thornton, Dalton Cooper, David Garman and Landon Sanders); Golf with coaches Rachel Poole (Girls) and Sam Stephens (Boys); Baseball with coach Jay McClure, and Soccer with Zak Stamm (girls) and Jason Xenos (boys). I was invited to the Track and Field practice by coach Andy Peffer, and had the pleasure of speaking to him about the up- coming season and team. He is very optimistic about the upcom- ing season, with three or four athletes who will continue their specialty in college! There are thirteen different competitions in CONGRATULATIONS track and field, sprints, long races, high jump, long jump, pole vault, etc. So, there will be a lot to cover from the athletes under coach Peffer. Let’s keep an eye on Jack Morgan (distance run- ner), Cooper Garbarino (Pole Vault), Remi Murray (Pole Vault), Madison Holladay (Sprint), Ameri Attebery (Hurdles) and Jeron ELKETTES Seymour (Hurdles)! As the season continues, we may find other names popping up on top as well. Coach Peffer will be assisted by Shane Thornton, Shylar Thornton, David Garmon, Dalton Coo- per and Landon Sanders. OSSAA 4A Coach Rachel Poole will have eight players, in order of “bag number” for now: Jayden Manning, Camryn Edney, Elliott Rain- REGIONAL ey, Meghan Sutter, Maddie Long, Kaydence Cox, Ava McCollum, Erin Womack and Kinlee Brewster who is injured and has no timeline to return. Coach Poole’s first tournament is on March CONSOLATION 25, so she will have plenty of time to get the girls ready to com- pete. CHAMPS Next week we will cover more sports after we speak with all coaches.
